Learn about poker pro Scotty Ngyuen

As his numerous winnings since his 1998 WSOP championship attest, Scotty Nguyen is one of the best poker players is the World.

Thuan B. "Scotty" Nguyen was born in 1962 in Nha Trang, Vietnam and came to the United States at the age of fourteen.

Thuan "Scotty" Nguyen flew his country at civil war and first went to Taiwan when he was eleven years old.

Two years later he found an American sponsor in Chicago, but the weather was too cold for him. Luckily he requested and got another sponsor from Orange County, California and arrived in 1976.

Scotty Nguyen struggled for many years without money in his bank account before becoming the poker superstar that he is now. Once in America, he almost immediately skipped school to play in underground poker games, but he never had a stable income.

Soon he headed for Las Vegas and his first job was to clean tables at the Harrah's Casino. As his first name Thuan was too exotic for the local taste, he was nicknamed "Scotty" by his boss, a name that he has kept to this day.

As his sight has always been on the Las Vegas poker tables since he had left his home country, he soon started dealing poker and then playing poker in Las Vegas.

Initially Scotty was not making any money and was more like a gambler burning all the money earned from his day job. He was a fish at Stud poker, according to his own recollection of these days.

But at some point he finally understood poker and started to make a killing, leaving his job and playing at high stakes games with Johnny Chan and David Grey. But there were a few more bumps on the road to fame for Scotty, as he lost his bankroll more than once.

Until 1998.

Scotty Nguyen was not a newcomer at the 1998 WSOP, as he already had one bracelet from the previous year when he won the $2,000 Omaha 8 or Better bracelet and the $157k prize. But 1998 would be the year when Scotty reached poker superstar status as he won the NLHE Main Event and the coveted 1 million dollar first prize.

The final hand of this tournament had Scotty make one of the most memorable poker history quote when he said to the runner-up Kevin McBride "You call this one, and it's gonna be all over, baby" on a 89988 board. As he had J9, he concluded the match with panache.

In 2008 "The prince of poker" as Scotty Nguyen is also called won another event that most professional consider to be the true consecration of the World champion, the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. World Championship.

Scotty Nguyen has a total of 5 WSOP bracelets, 37 WSOP money finishes, 1 WPT title, 17 WPT money finishes and 1 EPT money finish. His total live tournament winnings are over $11.3 million.

Scotty Nguyen is one of the best poker players in the World, with the reputation as one of the greatest masters of all variations of the game of poker. He does not play much online poker but it is rumored that he sometimes log on at Carbon Poker for a bit of NLHE $4/$2 for the fun.
