Johnny Chan is one of the best poker players in the World and one of the best Asian poker players, if not the best.

Johnny was made famous to the general public when he appeared in one of the most iconic poker movies of recent history, "Rounders". Mike McDermott played by Matt Damon is an aspiring poker pro who has taped the end of the 1998 WSOP main event when Johnny Chan checks and traps Erik Seidel into going all in while he had flopped the nuts flush of clubs.

This is Mike McDermott's motivational tape of sort, and when he wins a big poker match to pay off his debts, he heads for Las Vegas where he sits at the high stakes poker table of Johnny Chan.

There Mike realizes his dream of outbluffing Johnny by reraising him with air. When Johnny asks "did you have it?", Mike does not answer, demonstrating that he had finally graduated to the status of solid poker professional.

Johnny Chan was born Jon Chi Chan in Guangzhou in the south of China in 1957. His nickname at high stakes poker tables is Orient Express.

Johnny's family was in the restaurant business and they moved to Hong Kong in 1962, then Phoenix, Arizona in 1968 and Houston, Texas in 1973. After the final customer had left, the restaurant employees used to play poker in all variations and this is how the young teenager Johnny Chan learned the game of poker.

But very rapidly he was the usual winner and these games became too small for him. He ran a few escapades to Las Vegas until he definitively settled there as a poker professional at the young age of 21. Johnny has never looked back and the list of his winnings is exceptional.

First as was mentioned before, Johnny Chan won the WSOP main event, but not just once, twice indeed in 1987 and 1988. And he almost won three times in a row when he finished second to Phil Hellmuth in 1989.

In 2005 Chan became the first poker player to ever receive ten WSOP bracelets, but he was equaled by Doyle Brunson and then surpassed in 2008 by his nemesis Phil Hellmuth, when Phil got his eleventh. Johnny has 42 money finishes at the WSOP.

Johnny is a truly versatile poker player, a skill he learned from his early days. This is shown from the variety of his WSOP bracelets in LHE, PLHE, NLHE, Seven Card Stud, Deuce to Seven Draw and PLO. His total live tournament winnings are over $8 million.

Johnny Chan wrote a few poker books. "Play Poker like Johnny Chan" covers Johnny's strategy when he plays Limit and No-Limit Texas Hold'em poker as well as Seven Stud, Seven Stud Eight or Better and Omaha eight or better.
